Leipzig, located about 200km from Berlin, is a formerly East German city of roughly 530,000 people. Historically a major node in the global printing industry, today it is Germany's 12th-largest city, and is a big college town and center of far-left politics and culture. It is also, perhaps, the home of Germany´s best-kept and largest collection of Gründerzeit architecture, the term given to the wild and elaborately-detailed buildings of the mid-19th century. Oh, and yeah, people seem to be on to something: it is increasingly being referred to as the "new Berlin."
